Candid – Tonight (2023)
Known for their energetic, hard-hitting, heart-pumping performances, UK-based quintet Candid ooze passion in their emotive music. With their performances at the Isle of Wight Festival, BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and support for The Fratellis, The Snuts and Tom Clarke, the lads are garnering a loyal following with their intoxicating stage presence. Yet, while they have fans screaming their name at gigs, Candid is also turning heads in the media. Described as vivid, flamboyant and unmistakeable, the lads have received coverage on an international scale with features on The Punk Head, FV Music Blog, Illustrate Magazine, Eat This Rock, Our Sound Music, Mystic Sons, Good Music Radio, Radio Plus Coventry and various others. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Tonight’.
Following the well-received single ‘The Truth’, ‘Tonight’ sees Candid blasting into the new year with a sublime sound. Often compared to the Stereophonics and The Amazons, Candid has an obscurity to their music leaning toward the indie-rock sounds of the 1990s. Yet, while a tribute to 90s rock can be heard in ‘Tonight’, a strong contemporary tone slivers through the melody. A combination of pounding drums, dynamic guitars and otherworldly keyboard create a haunting but hard-hitting tune. The thing is, while a kaleidoscopic whimsy exists in the melody, it is frontman Rob Latimer’s vocals that bring a distinct rawness to the track.
Tossing you into a sonic whirlpool with your glad rags on, ‘Tonight’ is a representation of the “typical night out”. Traversing the party mode with an individual narrative, Candid capture the amused beginning of a wild night, the heightened joy as you dance around in the middle, and the final down when you skulk away a little worse for wear and lost in your thoughts. It’s a grand soundtrack to the nights which are completely forgotten with the hangover the next morning; but while it happened, the night with its anthemic single was awesome.
