Camens – Confetti & Kalashnikovs (2024)

Known for their raw intensity and electric energy, UK-based group Camens brings a refreshing newness to the UK indie rock scene. While their electrified performances caress a strong indie-rock sound, light and dark ooze from their melodies as the lads delve into darker alternative rock tones but rush forth with a light indie-pop tone. Over the past seven years (give or take), Camens have caught the attention of audiences across the globe elegantly capturing the vulnerability of escapism, the fragility of inner conflict and the freedom of empowerment with their music. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Confetti & Kalashnikovs’.

Following the well-received single ‘Cynical’, Camens shift from a gritty alternative rock meets indie-rock blend to upbeat flickers of indie-pop matched with a 90s pop-rock tone in ‘Confetti & Kalashnikovs’. For me, the intimacy and heartfelt endearment makes Camens a band to be experienced instead of merely heard. Listening to ‘Confetti & Kalashnikovs’, the lads seem to navigate a sensational sonic forest with mystical strums. Bold drums crash and beat beneath like a pulsating heart, while the dynamic guitars ebb and flow with an infectious crash; however, while the melody swarms about you with a soul-stirring rush of kaleidoscopic music, it is Scott Powell’s vocals that both bind the song and slivers through with serene tranquillity.

The melody is intoxicating in itself, but it is the lyricism that brings depth to ‘Confetti & Kalashnikovs’. A whimsical flair rides through the bright lights of ‘Confetti & Kalashnikovs’, with Camens once again dipping into the grimier side of life with the single. Touching on the delicate but overwhelming rollercoaster-ness of human relationships, the lads lift your heart with an upbeat charm and, simultaneously, encroach on the pain of confusion, frustration and anxiety experienced.

Taken from the band’s upcoming album WORK/LIFE/BALANCE, ‘Confetti & Kalashnikovs’ is sincere and sentimental with a sophisticated flow, yet the raw ruggedness of life continues to exist in Camens’ signature style. If you had not discovered Camens before, ‘Confetti & Kalashnikovs’ will have you hitting the repeat button over and over and over…
