Calm Attack – This Is Our Time (2022)

Influenced by artists like Thirty Seconds To Mars, Biffy Clyro, Twin Atlantic and Bush, UK-based Calm Attack have a hard-hitting sound that hits you in the gut (but you love it!). Embracing the power of social media, the Scottish group was formed in 2019 after the band members began playing alt-rock covers on Instagram. To date, the trio have released several singles and EPs, received coverage on notable blogs and radio stations, have been added to Spotify playlists, and performed with Twin Atlantic, The Twilight Sad and the X certs. The latest addition to the band’s critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘This Is Our Time’.

Touching on themes like love, death, mental health and religion – Calm Attack is not afraid to explore intimate, provocative topics in their music. Following their track ‘Falling To Pieces’, ‘This Is Our Time’ is an evocative ballad merging elements of alternative rock and indie-rock in a sonic capsule. Lucas Zawadski’s pounding drums flow effortlessly into Rory Jamieson’s bass and Chris Paterson’s guitars creating a melodic arrangement. Interestingly enough, while there is a flow in the instrumentation, each instrument has a prominent sound but comes together in harmonic rock.

Reminiscent of Biffy Clyro, the melody of ‘This Is Our Time’ has the power to hold its own; however, Paterson’s bold vocals contribute to a rich, warm sound that is distinctively Calm Attack. I’m not saying Paterson holds Calm Attack’s sound in his hands as Zawadski’s drums and Jamieson’s bass each bring a flair of their own. Moreover, their reputation as an energetic live band incorporates the skills of all members.

Sincere, sentimental and powerful, but with a melodic darkness flowing through the profound tune, Calm Attack show sophisticated elegance with their track ‘This Is Our Time’.
