Cade Huseby – Afterlight (2022)

Inspired by the likes of Troye Sivan and Grimes, US-based Cade Huseby brings a unique tinge to an electropop meets indie-pop sound. For approximately two years, Huseby has been establishing himself as an energetic, enthusiastic and engaging performer. The success of his debut single ‘Something Real’ saw Huseby captivate audiences across the internet, and he continues to hold people in the palm of his hand now. The latest addition to his critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Afterlight’.

Described by TikTok music blogger Danica Bryant as “…glittery electropop at its finest”, Cade Huseby has an unforgettable obscurity in his songs. Following the track ‘Someone’, ‘Afterlight’ layers ethereal synths atop commercial pop “boppiness”. Upbeat, toe-tapping and high-paced, Huseby gets your blood pumping with the charming melodic arrangement. Working with producer Pizzaccio, ‘Afterlife’ takes you on a trip through a kaleidoscopic sonic forest, but you feel as if you could fly through the trees. What I find particularly interesting about ‘Afterlife’ is how the opening and ending lift then drop you with powerful synths – like the introduction and conclusion of a beautiful story.

High-paced with a jovial quality, the melody appears to be laidback and light-hearted; however, a darker, more intense concept lies in the lyricism. Touching on human fragility and vulnerability, ‘Afterlife’ is a narrative that follows a highly guarded protagonist through a romantic encounter transcending the dimensions of light and love. Huseby explains that the track is “…all about my fear of being vulnerable. Having my guard up and armour on until someone or something resonates with my heart enough to tear down all my defences. After I show my truth, will it be enough for them to stay? The term ‘Afterlight’ is a visual representative for that moment after vulnerability and honesty…”

Sincere, sentimental, sensitive and sublime, ‘Afterlife’ is a sonic gem that I recommend to all listeners!
