Buenos Diaz – Cocaine Queen (2022)

With his EP Remember, Buenos Diaz packed a lot into the 5 tracks, touching on travel, rainy days, love and heroin addiction. He continues to tap into the world of addiction with his single ‘Cocaine Queen’ which considers the various forms of addiction we all face in life. Through the lyrics, he looks at the fact that we are all endlessly chasing something in life, whether that is love, friends, money, success or drugs and whether it is human nature to fall into some kind of obsession.

Playing the majority of the instrumentation himself, he is joined by Greg Clifford on the drums for this track. To bring this look at inhibitions and human nature, Diaz melts glitzy glam rock over a foundation of funky disco and dance grooves. Sure to get you moving while hopelessly hooked to his sound, the track will have you bending the knee to this addictive queen.

‘Cocaine Queen’ uses a really interesting bursting pulse of tones in the opening to grab your attention. This turns into a smoother and groovier vibe as the pulsing tones meet a shimmer of danceable sounds. There is something in this melody that grabs you by the shoulders and forces you to move, whether you want to or not. The guitar plucks and vibrates across the dancefloor, leaving a trail of light that you are drawn to follow. This light leads you deeper into the dancing feeling that is softened by the light touches of glam rock. It is a perfectly blended melody that brings the best elements of different styles together for an addictive movement. As you listen to the melody, there are new lines and layers being added all the time, making you want to delve into its depths to soak up all of them. The guitar riff that comes through later is a pleasure to listen to and heads into a building keyboard sparkle that infuses a spin of disco vibes into your soul.

Diaz’s vocals have an almost sombre feeling as they enter against the backdrop of the groovy melodics. He effortlessly connects with you and pulls you into the spiral of addiction. The grounded feeling of the opening vocals starts to lift as you spin into the trip of the lyrics. This is a fantastic sonic device that brings you out of the darkness and onto the sparkling dancefloor of the single. As the track continues, you are pulled under the spell of the cocaine queen who is the embodiment of all addictions. While the lyrics detail a spiral and loss of inhibition, there is a larger message just waiting for you to grab onto it.

Sparkling with a touch of glam rock sprinkled over a groovy foundation, ‘Cocaine Queen’ by Buenos Diaz pulls us into a loss of inhibitions with a deeper message resting below. The music hits you with sparkling tones early on, but it is the continued layering of melodic elements that really hooks you. As you move to the music, his vocals bring a story to life through the nuanced delivery and fantastic lyrics.
