Buda – Blackbelt Production (2020)

Buda is back after a seven-year hiatus with ‘Blackbelt Production’. The single is an introduction to his new collection of jazzy funk/inspired music which he has spent lockdown creating. Drawing on the emotional rollercoaster we have all been through, he creates a dynamic sound explosion full of funk, grooves and a splash of hip-hop.

While this single is an end to his recording hiatus, Buda has been playing his music live. Over the last three decades, he has been the founding member of Bad Reputation and the lead vocalist of Buddhafied. If you are looking for a song that is infused with funky beats and a hint of Brazil, this is the song for you.

‘Blackbelt Production’ has a very groovy opening that slides you into the song. The jazzy sounds of the melody are light as they create a base for the vocals. While not the focus of the track, the melodic lines keep drawing you further into the song. The melody is relatively simple, but there are these lines that come in later in the song that add a bit of swing to the music. The beats are also great as they bolster the vocals.

Buda’s vocals are a little at odds to the melody as it is all hip-hop. However, the combination of these elements is skilfully executed to create an intriguing soundscape. The vocals have their own melodic flow that gives a splash of hip-hop rhythm to the music. The chorus gets your shoulders moving to the rhythm and you might just feel the urge to sing along. The slide of the vocals creates a compelling track that draws you into the story of the lyrics.
