Brother Dynamite – The Girl’s In Love (2024)

With their new single ‘The Girl’s In Love’, New York duo Brother Dynamite has produced what I can only describe as simple feel-good power-pop. Having been writing and performing together since high school, Shawn Moynihan and Alan Miller have shown what such a long-standing friendship can do for the creative process. You can tell they just have fun with it and what you get at the end is a catchy, bouncy and all round fantastic track from these two seasoned musicians.

From the opening bars, we’re treated to a perfectly balanced tone coupled with note-perfect vocals delivering a great hook with “the girl’s in love…” which seems to go on forever. Not only is it a wonderful lesson in pop but also tells a story of all the feelings and actions that love can make you experience. I think this is what sets ok pop from great pop, the ability to take your listeners on a journey while keeping it light.

It reminded me of a lot of bands that scattered the charts in the late 90s such as Semisonic and The New Radicals with the sprinkling of the previous collaborator Danny Weinkauf’s band They Might Be Giants. The single is definitely soundtrack music, upon first hearing it I instantly thought of all the films I grew up watching from Dumb and Dumber to There’s Something About Mary. ‘The Girl’s in Love’ could take pride and place amongst classics like The Primitives hit ‘Crash’ and ‘Semi-Charmed Kind of Life’ by the legendary Third Eye Blind.

Being a 90s kid and loving everything from that decade, Brother Dynamite has really touched a nerve with me, tapping into nostalgia whilst still keeping it contemporary which is no easy task. Their 2022 album If We Dare will be the next stop as I delve more into their work. I implore you to do the same.
