Bright Tree Village – The Spark (2023)

Describing themselves as a “dad rock duo”, US-based group Bright Tree Village tap into the 90s rock sounds creating that breezy, laidback, grin-inducing sound that dominated every music industry-themed show of the time. Meeting as members of San Francisco’s Balanced Breakfast community – an international project introducing music industry professionals for collaborations, not a group talking about healthy diets – Jeff August and Tim Leehane became Bright Tree Village. Featured on Send Me Your Ears, Lost In The Manor, TJPL News and Music For All, the lads have been described as “explosive…” (Music Taste) and “creating a dynamic sonic landscape” (Each Measure). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Spark’.

The fourth single from Bright Tree Village, ‘The Spark’ follows ‘I Miss The Hell Out Of You’ as the first release in 2023. Reminiscent of REM with a hint of Coldplay slithering through the melody, ‘The Spark’ fuses 90s alternative rock with grunge and a tinge of pop. Matching a powerful blast of guitars with prominent beats, the lads find a line between hard-hitting heaviness and harmonic delight in the new track. Sprinkle the soft keyboard beneath the dynamic instrumentation, and you have a song to tap on your heart, pound in your soul, and leave you twirling about in a whimsical kaleidoscopic haze.

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Leehane in his basement studio, the instrumentation is a bold twirl of sound; however, it is Jeff August’s lead vocals that bring a sense of vulnerability to ‘The Spark’. While the track is an empowering one bursting with an optimistic hopefulness, a delicate touch on human fragility can be felt swimming in the tune. It’s like Bright Tree Village lay bare a soulful vulnerability that is carefully embraced in a comforting sense of resilience, acceptance and that it will all “be okay”.

Confident, calming and charming in its contemplative poetry, ‘The Spark’ will have you grinning on even the most desperate and overwhelmingly difficult days. It’s that breath of fresh air, the light at the end of the tunnel, and the constant belief that things will become better.
