Brie Spaulding – Flowers for the Dead (2020)

For many people, there are few times that have held the same darkness as the last year. With many people falling into depression and feeling the unrelenting stress of the pandemic crushing them, Brie Spaulding is offering a mental hug and comfort with ‘Flowers for the Dead’. While the single has an edge of melancholy, it also offers a soothing tone that wraps around you providing the comfort you might need right now.

As her debut single, this track drew Spaulding into a musical career. While passionate about music, she was finishing degrees in psychology and pre-medical studies when it came to her. Her background and experience in medicine provide a different perspective on life that influences her music.

‘Flowers for the Dead’ opens with a hauntingly beautiful piano line with a light static resting over it. The flow of the piano line gives the single an earthy feeling with a tinge of melancholy. While the melody is driven by this sombre piano line, there are other tones and melodic elements that come and go through the music. This adds a sense of daily life to the melody as they connect with relatable actions in life. The combination of these elements creates a very interesting melody that is flowing while soothing and captivating.

The melancholy of the melody is eased by Spaulding’s vocals. Her light voice moves from sadness and depression to a rising out of the darkness. The almost conversational feeling of her performance makes it so easy to connect with the single and the lyrics. Through her vocals, you are filled with a deep sadness only to slowly work through it and come out with a sense of lightness. This is an emotional journey that many people need right now. The single acts like a commiserating embrace letting you know others understand what you feel and that you will be able to get through it.

Brie Spaulding wraps you in melancholy only to help you work through your sadness in the gentle embrace of ‘Flowers for the Dead’. The piano-driven melody is beautiful in its sadness as it draws you into the sombre mood of the single. Spaulding’s vocals provide the upliftment and embrace you need to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
