Brid Lyons – Mothlight (2025)
For almost ten years, singer-songwriter Brid Lyons has been carefully constructing and honing a style that would define her as a promising talent in the Irish folk music scene. Working in collaboration with other artists, but also building an independent persona, Kilkenny-born Lyons fully embraced her solo project in 2021 with her debut single ‘October’. From that pivotal moment, her poetic lyricism, intricate storytelling, and roots in traditional Celtic folk entwine audiences in an ethereal soundscape that you can’t seem to escape. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Mothlight’.
Following the well-received 2024 single, ‘Lantern Song’, Lyons saunters into the new year with ‘Mothlight’. Recorded and produced by Gavin Doyle, with mastering by Martin Quinn, ‘Mothlight’ traipses across slicks of vintage folk with acoustic guitar, percussion and peeks of piano bound with effortless ease. Interestingly, just as the single has the structure of old-school folk, an odd floating sensation lingers offering a free-flowing but sturdy composition.
In recent years, I have come across several Irish artists who hold to their Irish heritage in their melodies – Brid Lyons is one of these intriguing characters. Enhancing a simultaneous sense of dreadful haunting and warm comfort, fiddler Jayne Pomplas takes us on a soaring trip celebrating loss and love, tragedy and triumph in Lyons’ new single. When touching on the theme of ‘Mothlight’, Lyons shares:
“A poignant folk ballad that explores the tension between longing and connection, where shared skies and moonlight become symbols of love both distant and deeply intertwined. Written during a summon of realisation, and recorded on the day of an unexpected heartbreak, the song captures irreplicable vulnerability.…”
One of several songs yet to come throughout 2025, ‘Mothlight’ is a beautiful, whimsical, and slightly eerie introduction to Brid Lyons. With her delicate vocals executing profound stories, I am eager to hear more and highly recommend you join me on this venture.
