Brian Noyes – Tapestries (2025)
If you haven’t heard of musician Brian Noyes as a solo artist, you might know him as a member of the psych-pop band Tomten or as the touring keyboardist for Papercuts. As an introduction to Noyes, our draw is Noyes as a solo musician. An eclectic musician, the US-based singer-songwriter traipses through several flavours of folk blending genres in a silvery concoction, pushing sounds to unconventional and experimental limits. For several years, Noyes brought this eccentricity to audiences, but today we delve into his most recent release, ‘Tapestries’.
Following his well-received singles ‘Anyone’s Guess’ and ‘Faust’, ‘Tapestries’ is Noyes’s first step into 2025. Similar to the past singles, the track offers a strong folk flair; however, a slip of diversity exists within the melody. An acoustic guitar takes centre stage bringing the vintage folk tone to ‘Tapestries’, but a psychedelic wave washes across with a mellotron and electric 12-string guitar. It’s an aptly named tapestry of music, yet just as the sound wiggles from your speakers, it is not merely a hearing experience.
To listen to Brian Noyes is to lose yourself as you feel and not only hear the song. In ‘Tapestries’, you travel along a kaleidoscopic sonic river in your happy bubble. Flooded with pinks, greens, yellows, and a twinkling silvery shimmer, the world seems jovial glittering with charming fairy lights.
Melodically, ‘Tapestries’ is a toe-tapping journey through old-school folk with smile-inducing sentimentality; however, the lyricism is not as light-hearted as the tune. Similar to artists like Magna Carta, the song might appear wholesome, but complexity lies beneath. Hidden vulnerability and melancholy whisper from ‘Tapestries’ as Noyes takes us on an intricate journey of metaphysical significance.
So, what are my thoughts regarding Brian Noyes and ‘Tapestries’? Raised on Magna Carta and Uriah Heep, I found myself lost in the mystical magic of the track. Simplistic and kaleidoscopic, ‘Tapestries’ teeters between intense poignancy and tender sincerity. One of the tracks from Noyes’ upcoming album, Seelie Court, ‘Tapestries’ is a song to stick in your mind. I cannot wait to hear what else the album has to offer. Highly recommended!
