Brian Casey the Destroyer – American Carnage (2021)
From the album of the same name, ‘American Carnage’ is the perfect introduction to the dark sounds of the album by Brian Casey the Destroyer. Taking on the last four years of American politics and the grim pressure society was put under, the track moves you with some classic rock sounds wrapped around the wailings of psychedelic guitars. With a renewed fervour, you are invited to bear witness to a sonic representation of a dark historical era.
While musician and producer Brian Casey is the man behind the music, his alter-ego The Destroyer is in control for this track. After lying dormant since his debut album, he has returned with vigour for an unrelenting assault. Uncompromising and eye-opening, he tells the tale of life, incompetence and corruption.
The vibrating guitar line that opens ‘American Carnage’ fuses with the floating vocals to effortlessly draw you into the single. The almost ominous and oppressive sense of the melody gives way to a lighter flow. This has a slightly vintage feeling to it that harkens back to the heyday of classic rock. The soaring guitars tumble through your senses as they send you flying to their tone. The melody is really a master class on flying guitars and the sensation they evoke. The change in the melody close to the end of the track brings you to ground for a dose of reality.
While the melody is a serious highlight of the track, the vocals bring a cinematic feeling to the single. The light haziness resting in the vocals adds a hint of psychedelia to the song while making them seem far away and hard to grab onto. However, this only enhances the hit of the lyrics which are actually really sobering, regardless of what the soaring melody makes you think. When the melody swings, the vocals swing with it for an intimate whispered movement that has a hint of hope shining through the darker feeling of depression.
Brian Casey the Destroyer takes on the emotions of political change and the carnage this can bring in ‘American Carnage’. With soaring guitar lines that drop for a grounding end, he tumbles the emotions of the track through you. The hazy vocals bring a sobering message that you will not be expecting with those guitars.
