Bree Whitworth – Time (2021)

The right timing is vital for most things in life including when you fall in love. Bree Whitworth considers finding the person of your dreams when the timing is off and how this can doom a relationship in the aptly titled ‘Time’. With a touch of the 80s for some romantic nostalgia, she sinks into reflection and a situation that has become more common with the pandemic.

Using her own experience of love when the timing is off, she pours her emotion into her performance. Written during the height of the pandemic, Whitworth worked with her long-time producer Winston Hauschild via Zoom to build the melodies and song structures. The result was two amazing singles that capture common experiences and bring them to life in an engaging manner.

Whitworth’s vocals draw you into ‘Time’ with an effortless question. From the first moment, there is a feeling of heartbreak and pain woven into her vocals that reaches into your chest and squeezes your heart. Her vocals are so emotive as they float against your senses like gossamer feathers. Through her performance, you are able to feel the emotions of the track as if they have happened to you and you are the one questioning what can be done to overcome them. As the single continues, the movement of the music creates a retro pop vibe for the vocals that give it a touch of dance energy while still packed with melancholy.

Resting beneath her emotive performance is a dynamic melody that moves from breathy sounds to 80s pop pulses. Through the first half of the track, there is a tender softness to the music that adds power and poignancy to the vocals. The pulses of electronic tones slowly make their way into the soundscape to bring the dance edge to the track that brings a heavier hit of nostalgia to the track. The progression from softness to pulsing retro tones is amazing and so organic that you can’t think of any other way it could happen.
