Brea Fournier & The Dream Ballet – What Happens In The End? (2024)

Technically, this is not our introduction to Brea Fournier & The Dream Ballet having reviewed her single ‘Not My Soulmate’ earlier this year; however, each track released by the US-based group astounds as something entirely new. In the critically acclaimed album Manic Pixie Dream Girl, the band incorporated various genres like indie-rock, alternative rock, pop-punk, grunge and even a hint of folk-rock. So, honestly, you cannot anticipate what Fournier & The Dream Ballet will offer in the next release. Today, they continue to push melodic boundaries with their new single ‘What Happens In The End?’.

Described as an “ABBA meets The Strokes” style single, one might imagine vintage power-pop melded into an indie-rock tone with ‘What Happens In The End?’. Then again, Brea Fournier & The Dream Ballet are far more than a single (or a couple) of genres. A blend of indie-pop swooning through a kaleidoscopic synth-pop twirl with a strong alternative rock sheen clinging to an indie-rock wrapper, ‘What Happens In The End?’ brims with eclectic innovation. Difficult to define, that’s for sure, but one thing we all can agree on is that Brea Fournier & The Dream Ballet capture raw emotion in every second of their inimitable sound.

Combining the natural talent of Fournier (vocals), Ben Shanblatt (guitar), Noah Rosner (bass) and Sophia Bondi (drums), ‘What Happens In The End?’ captures the complexities of toxic relationships and the ultimate consequences when everything plays out. Sugary sweet tones glistening in bubble-gum pink beauty, Fournier’s rich vocals have a playful innocence to them; however, fragility and confusion lie beneath the shiny exterior. Moreover, the instruments might carry a summery vibe but, in line with the theme, there is a hard-hitting intensity in the full-bodied melody.

Vibrant and vivid confidence but with shivering wonderment and confusion, ‘What Happens In The End?’ elegantly delves into the complexity of the human psyche. Already a fan, I cannot wait for more from these talented individuals.
