Brad Pittance and the Pirates – One Night Stand (2024)

Some people say ska music was just a smash of punk and reggae; well, did Madness and The Specials just make some sound without any real direction? Maybe, maybe they were smashing out tunes with a hint of some two-tone idea, but the first revival of ska was sensational – and it still is. Following Beyonce’s popular ska album, everyone is falling for the genre; however, UK-based Brad Pittance and the Pirates bring life to the ska scene. Blending the best of reggae with the power of punk and a bit of a rock thrown in, Brad Pittance and the Pirates intoxicate listeners on a global level; kind of like grabbing all the treasure on the pirate musical journey. Come with us as we dive into their single ‘One Night Stand’.

My live introduction to ska was about 20 years ago at a small festival in Canada with The Plaid Tongued Devils owning the stage. To me, they were the epitome of a punk flipped with reggae and alternative rock style… until now. Influenced by the likes of Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners, Prince Buster and Desmond Dekker, Brad Pittance and the Pirates slither into your brain, rock about your cranium, then send shivers along your skin with the urgent, frenzied but harmonious melodies.

Taken off their recent EP, Love, Lust and Skadust, ‘One Night Stand’ brings punk brashness with jovial reggae vibes but shakes it up with the insatiable brand of toe-tapping ska. Immersing listeners into a bubble of kaleidoscopic chaos tossed with reckless abandon, Brad Pittance and the Pirates carelessly tosses you about, but you love every second.

With the bold lyrical punches over a pulsating drum, bold bass, soaring guitars and powerful trumpet, ‘One Night Stand’ is not only an exciting melody but an interesting story. Penned as a tale of a lad who goes to a ska gig hoping to hook up with this girl he’s been eyeing and then falling in love with the music instead, Brad Pittance and the Pirates paint a vivid picture in ‘One Night Stand’ as a testament to the power of not only ska but music. Dumbfounded by the blissful awesomeness, I recommend the masterful Brad Pittance and the Pirates to everyone!
