Boy Ferguson – Grown Man (2024)

By day a music composer/sound designer for fashion commercials, but at night an independent musician. The brainchild of singer-songwriter Oliver Gale, Boy Ferguson is Gale’s solace, catharsis, creativity, communication and inspiration. Not a newbie in the music industry, and I don’t mean his work as a music composer, UK-based Gale performed as Blue Boats which dissolved in 2013. For about 11 years, he has been “scratching at new projects and this is the first to make it through…” Join us as we take a deep breath, close our eyes and jump headfirst into Boy Ferguson’s debut single.

Influenced by the likes of Peter Gabriel, Bruce Hornsby and Bruce Springsteen, one might imagine a hard-hitting flood of classic rock with folksy eclecticism and a pop-tinged flair; well, you’re not far off. Recorded and produced at his Hackney home studio, Boy Ferguson’s ‘Grown Man’ is a soothing fusion of indie-pop and alternative pop simmering in a melting pot of music. Tipping his hat at the old-school sounds of Peter Gabriel, ‘Grown Man’ would not go amiss on any art pop or progressive rock playlist; however, the almost avant-garde diversity lingers bringing unique slices of roots, folk and rock to the tune.

For me, Boy Ferguson is a rich rub of old-school alternative pop; however, the interspersed catches of folk give it an intriguing style. Light amidst a darker tone, like brightness shining through a depth of tragedy or hopeful confidence breaking melancholy vulnerability; ‘Grown Man’ oscillates from gritty reality to optimistic empowerment.

They say hindsight is a marvellous thing, then again, is it? Reflecting on a lost past without any real plan for the future is terrifying, morbid and heartbreaking in its own way. Honest reflection can be one of the most damaging or most enlightening things on earth. Capturing the core of this emotion, Boy Ferguson’s ‘Grown Man’ “…is about the regret of forever searching for satisfaction in an unsettled state.”
