Boy Ferguson – Green Light (2025)

Hailing from Hackney, UK-based singer-songwriter Boy Ferguson captures the crux of humanity, reality and life as we know it. Celebrating both dark grittiness and optimistic brightness, there is a weaving of tragedy, triumph and relatable honesty in his tunes. We first discovered Boy Ferguson last year with his debut single, ‘Grown Man’, but Oliver Gale (the man behind the moniker) has shared music for over a decade. Today, he lures us once again with his latest single, ‘Green Light’.

Following the well-received tracks ‘Grown Man’ and ‘Julia’, Boy Ferguson saunters into 2025 with ‘Green Light’. Perhaps this is not necessarily finding his niche or stamping out a mark for being genre-diverse, but ‘Green Light’ retains certain aspects of previous material while striking out in a new direction.

Slips of folk-rock simmer in ‘Green Light’, but the rollercoaster ride inserts highs of indie-rock with a softer folk vibe. Is he folk, is he indie-rock, is he indie-folk? Does it really matter if the music is good? Self-recorded and produced by Boy Ferguson, the soaring guitars, bold piano and shimmering synths wrap about you with a kaleidoscopic sheen; however, weightiness lies in George Rothman’s drums kicking an extra emotional something-something into ‘Green Light’.

Melodically, ‘Green Light’ is a place of comfort, solace and heartfelt companionship with Boy Ferguson’s rough vocals being a friend in times of confusion. Matching this sound, and adding profoundness, is the powerful, poignant lyricism. Exploring the complexities of relationships – and a slight spiralling of overthinking, late-night thoughts – Ferguson explains:

“’Green Light’ is about that last, almost delusional attempt to win someone back – the moment where you know you’ve lost, but you still throw everything at the wall anyway. The verses live in that nostalgic space, where everything seems just close enough to touch. But the choruses? That’s the emotional crash. That’s the reality hitting all at once.”

Sincere, reflective, sentimental and relatable, ‘Green Light’ is the wonderful feeling of “you’re not alone in your craziness”. Boy Ferguson’s project is still in its infancy, and so far it’s quite intriguing. I hope he keeps this momentum and I am eager to hear his upcoming EP.
