Bones in Butter – Stop Dancing Now! (2022)

Bones in Butter are one of those bands that you have to follow as they progress through the music world and that is exactly what we have been doing. Since the first time we heard their single ‘Littlewing’, we have been hooked to the unique personality they infuse into their music. The draw the band has continues with their latest single ‘Stop Dancing Now!’.

With this single, the band brings a doomsday vibe to our ears as they dive into the progression of humanity through greed and ruthlessness. To bring the message of the track home, the band takes a detour from their usual sound with the incorporation of industrial and electronic tones. Along with these new tones, their post-rock and post-punk styles fly out of your speakers to get you hooked even more to their style and music.

‘Stop Dancing Now!’ hits the ground running with a burst of electronic industrial tones that warbles out into the main melodic line. There is a rather frantic pulse to the beats and lower level tones that get your heart pumping. The melody is packed with layers that each brings their own frenetic energy to the sound. As you listen to the melody, you are filled with a sense of panic like there is too much energy in your body and it needs to find some way to escape. As the single progresses, an eerie electronic tone haunts the higher layers of the melody bringing a strange dystopian edge to the sound. Later in the track, the frantic pace of the melody drops allowing you to breathe only for the guitar to pick you up and start running.

As the melody fills you with frantic energy, the vocals hum and shout out over the industrial tones. These higher vocal tones lead you to a dark echoing main vocal line. This line lays out a stark assessment of humanity and what we have done to the world around us. There is an insidious whispering that comes through later in the track as the vocals echo against the energy of the music. It is an interesting interplay between the electrified tones of the music and the sombre assessment of the vocals. Through all of this, those higher humming vocals come and go acting like a lighter layer of instrumentation.

Bones in Butter continue to impress with ‘Stop Dancing Now!’ which dives into frantic energy and doomsday assessments. The music shakes you up and throws you into the frenetic energy of the electronic tones. While the vocals are relatively spare throughout the track, the impact they have when they echo through the soundscape is immense.
