Blueburst – Supernova (2023)

Experiencing disappointment and rejection is part of life, it’s natural and never easy. When it comes to Craig Douglas Miller, he put a musical career aside for two decades after his 1990s band The Reach failed. Entering a prolonged “musical hiatus”, the result of untreated clinical depression and, as Miller puts it, “a few too many gin and tonics”. Now, out of the ashes, Craig Douglas Miller is back with a vengeance. Teaming up with iconic guitarist Marty Willson-Piper, Douglas put all that time on his hands during the pandemic to good use and formed Blueburst. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Supernova’.

Following their critically acclaimed debut single ‘Vanish’, ‘Supernova’ is another suave guitar-based alternative rock tune from Blueburst. Retaining a vintage rock style, ‘Supernova’ steps back to the sounds of yesteryear. While ‘Vanish’ had an 80s rock sound, the new single leans more toward 1990s alternative rock. Infusing elements of grunge with the alt-rock tone of ‘Supernova’ you find something between Radiohead, Soundgarden and Blur. Miller shares that “most of my friends and a lot of younger people as well are still listening to the albums we grew up with, I think because there’s a rawness and honesty in that music. That’s what we aspired to here” – and this is exactly what we received.

While the fusion of powerful guitars, bold vocals and pounding drums (courtesy of Michael Jerome Moore), ‘Supernova’ is a song of anthemic levels. Easily one of those singles played at a festival with an audience pumping their hands as they sing along or rather scream along to the lyrics. Capturing the joviality and energy of this enthusiastic emotion, ‘Supernova’ chronicles the carpe diem approach to life; the ethos that inspired the formation of Blueburst.

“After turning 50, I decided it was time to quit stalling and get on with it, damn the torpedoes. That’s what this song is about. We only get one shot at life, and you’ve got to make the most of things while you can.” – Craig Douglas Miller on ‘Supernova’
