Blue Shirt Charlie – Shelter (2023)

As part of the alt-country revolution, Blue Shirt Charlie was a force to be reckoned with purveying a unique brand of Americana to the masses. Enthusiastic, energetic and electric, you knew you could have fun with the pounding rhythms of this group. Skip ahead several years and the lads are back reuniting to build a reputation for more pounding rhythms with profound themes. Tempering their themes of renewal and empowerment with “scar tissue from divorce, war deployments, and bolt-from-the-blue tragedies”, Richie Sessions, Russ Chapman and Lex Lipsitz capture humanity in all its gritty glory with their new material. Come with us as we delve into the band’s debut single, ‘Shelter’.

After penning songs for other artists (Wade Bowen), fronting side projects (The Mars McClanes) and working in the studio with artists like Sean Stemaly and Kid Ink, the lads reflect on reality in ‘Shelter’ by asking what gets you through the day. Recorded at the Nashville studio Southern Comfort, Blue Shirt Charlie blends elements of country, rock and roll, and alternative rock in a three-minute sonic package. A nostalgic flair exists in ‘Shelter’ paying tribute to the old-school Nashville country scene; however, a modern-day edginess is evident with contemporary rock woven into the sonic tapestry.

Bold, rich and powerful, Sessions, Chapman and Lipsitz capture a passion for life with the harmonic arrangement. Yet, just as they stand with one foot in yesteryear and the other in 2023, Blue Shirt Charlie intertwines hope and empowerment with bittersweet vulnerability and angst in ‘Shelter’. Sincere, sentimental and soothing, Blue Shirt Charlie instantly bowled me over with their sensational debut single.
