Blue Shirt Charlie – Crazy Woman (2023)

From Send Me Your Ears to Rock Era Magazine, iHeart Radio, Rock Charts News, Music For All, Indie Chronique and Indie O’Clock, US-based Blue Shirt Charlie are turning heads with their alt-rock meets country meets indie-rock mishmash of sound. At the dawn of the alt-country revolution, Richie Sessions, Russ Chapman and Lex Lipsitz came together to “purvey a unique brand of Americana to the masses”. They came, they played, and they won the hearts of listeners throughout the USA with their charm (oh and music of course), then they went their own ways.

They say nothing good lasts forever and it might have been the case with Blue Shirt Charlie; however, after facing war deployments, difficult divorce, and “bolt-from-the-blue tragedies”, the trio prove the best things in life cannot die. Back in full force, veteran musicians Blue Shirt Charlie re-emerge touching on topics like empowerment, challenges, pain and human life in its totality. Following their debut single ‘Shelter’, Sessions, Chapman and Lipsitz recall “real-life tragedies of family and friends” in ‘Crazy Woman’.

As Leonard Cohen observed, “there is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in”, and this is effortlessly captured in Blue Shirt Charlie’s ‘Crazy Woman’. One of their most personal tracks, the lads tap into the frustration, pain, confusion and exhaustion of difficult relationships. They explain that ‘Crazy Woman’ “reflects on the lost moments of a relationship tangled in mental health struggles” – something that is intimate, personal and relatable at an alarming rate in today’s society.

As with ‘Shelter’, a sliver of old-school U2 flows through ‘Crazy Woman’. Toe-tapping and melodic, there is a soothing quality to the song setting your soul at ease with the harmonic arrangement. Yet, while a mellifluous nature flows through ‘Crazy Woman’, the poignancy of its theme creeps through the toe-tapping single. The vocal execution finds the line between painful vulnerability and heart-warming tenderness, while the instrumentation brings a foot-stomping pleasantry to ‘Crazy Woman’. Sincere, sentimental and highly sophisticated, Blue Shirt Charlie’s ‘Crazy Woman’ is not a song to merely listen to but one to embrace with every fibre of your being.
