Blitz Playhouse – Favourite Ghost (2024)

With a yearning to be a “smorgasbord” of sound, international quartet Blitz Playhouse will always keep you guessing. Drawing together slivers of alternative pop, dream pop and psychedelic rock, the Trans-Atlantic group immerses you in an almost palpable haze of ethereal sound. Described as mesmerising, whimsical, all-consuming and mystical, the enigmatic force that is Blitz Playhouse ensnares audiences from the US to the UK, France and beyond. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Favourite Ghost’.

Following their debut single ‘Under The Sun’ in 2021, ‘Favourite Ghost’ is Blitz Playhouse’s first release in three years. Returning to the music scene, the new single is an eclectic combination of indie-rock with hints of post-punk and grunge fluttering in the melody. Interestingly, while there is a potential categorisation of the tune with structured indie-rock stylings, a sense of avant-garde sits in ‘Favourite Ghost’ – this is particularly heard in Bella Geiwald’s vocals.

One element I find especially intriguing is how ‘Favourite Ghost’ captures a whimsical haunting like treading through a sparse sonic forest, yet the percussion of James Larter, bass of Joshua Woolf and melodic guitars of Joe Wilkins hints at a rich robustness intricately interwoven. Confident but with subdued delicacy. Fragile but with a sense of empowerment. Pure and honest but with tainted tragedy. In ‘Favourite Ghost’ Blitz Playhouse draw a line between lingering melancholy with poignant vulnerability and optimistic empowerment.

’Favourite Ghost’… offers big panoramic sounds that make me think of driving on the 101 and of California. In this majestic sonic landscape, I am driving down the coast with my angels beside me… the song features ethereal laid-back vocals that draw from carrying on in life even after relationships change and evolve…. With an emphasis on building gratitude for hard lessons in life.” – Blitz Playhouse on ‘Favourite Ghost’
