Blindness & Light – All On You (2024)
One of the most intriguing things about music is its borderless expression, from pushing the sounds of genres to drawing together musical stylings of artists on opposite sides of the planet. It’s fluid, moving, constantly evolving and the best way to define, describe and express intimate thoughts beyond language. When it comes to Blindness & Light, the band are anything but pedestrian approaching and transcending musical conventionalism. Created as an informal collective of like-minded people, Blindness & Light is in constant evolution grasping at raw emotion in their insatiable music. The latest addition to their repertoire is the single ‘All On You’.
One of the three singles running up to the release of Blindness & Light’s sophomore album (set for release in early 2025), ‘All On You’ is an eclectic blend of reggae, grunge, and indie-rock. Recorded and produced in the UK by Blindness & Light, with mixing and mastering at Outback Studios in Germany, it is a daring leap into an experimental realm of eclectic, obscure and slightly disconcerting music.
Experimental to say the least, the combination of Colin M Potter’s guitar, Henry Priestman’s melodica and Chris Hall’s bass is an innovative crash tossing you into a whirlpool of sound. With bright lights slicing through the darkness, you find yourself tossed with reckless abandon in kaleidoscopic chaos. Discomforting and frenzied, it is difficult to find your feet in the melody; however, Potter’s warm vocals grab your hand to navigate the music. Interestingly, Junior Dayvis’ backing vocals add a sinister element to its interplay with Potter’s rich but equally creepy tones.
While the melody stands on its own as a moving collision of music, it is the lyricism and theme that bring it to life. Blindness & Light explain:
“This is about people we’ve known who have hit the self-destruct button in response to traumatic events in their lives. Their aim is to self-harm through drug and alcohol abuse, end up fighting in city centres, and spend their nights in A&E. This creates pain that distracts from the deeper loathing they have for themselves and life in general…”
