Blind Man’s Daughter – Kyhell (2023)

A labour of love for singer-songwriter Ashley Wolfe, melodic progressive metal act Blind Man’s Daughter finds a unique blend of metal with a hint of hard rock tinged around the edges. Originally founded in 2012 by US-based Wolfe, BMD proved a powerful musical outlet with passion and creativity; however, it was after Wolfe’s move to Albuquerque, New Mexico, that BMD grew from a studio project to “one of the most exciting new sounds in the metal scene”. Working with local musicians and writing original songs at a furious pace, Blind Man’s Daughter is astounding audiences across the globe with its moving melodies. Come with us as we delve into the band’s critically acclaimed discography.

Following the well-received debut single ‘Mirage Harmer’, Blind Man’s Daughter release the sophomore track ‘Kyhell’. As with ‘Mirage Harmer’, ‘Kyhell’ embraces a hard-hitting metal sound but on a higher, more chaotic level. Opening with a steady guitar, you are lulled into a sense of security; however, the softness lasts only a few seconds. Crescendos into a hurricane of music bring together hard-hitting guitars, pounding drums and Wolfe’s obscure vocals. Interestingly, just as the madness ensues there is a quick drop to a catchy guitar riff…and then it begins again.

Filled with a passionate tossing from one sonic pillar to the other, ‘Kyhell’ is a bucket of contained insanity. A rollercoaster of drums and guitars has you gasping for air while the vocals have you looking about in frenzied intoxication. One aspect I find intriguing is that ‘Kyhell’ has a sense of cohesiveness in the arrangement; however, there is a distortion that can be discomforting. Wolfe’s vocals, in particular, appear to be flitting about with a constant ebb and flow in the whimsical execution.

So, what is my overall opinion of ‘Kyhell’ and Blind Man’s Daughter? In a single word: mind-blowing. Soft and strong, powerful and whimsical, smooth and brash, confident but with a hint of vulnerability, ‘Kyhell’ is a song I will not easily forget. Blind Man’s Daughter is one of the most intriguing artists I have ever come across and definitely one to watch.
