Black Borrachero – Idle Time (2021)

In the rushed modern world, it seems like we always need to be doing something without a moment where we simply sit back and do nothing. Black Borrachero are hitting out at this idea while reminding us that our minds need a break in the aptly titled ‘Idle Time’. Through the loud and grungy sound of the single, the band considers how idle time helps the creative juices and urges us to all take some time to be alone and bored.

With a sound that fits into the heyday of grunge and skater-rock, the band brings a refinement to the sound that does nothing to detract from the loud push. The single comes from the creative minds of Chris Goldie (drums), Nicholas Traill (bass) and Nick Fisher (vocals, guitar). Fisher met the band’s original bassist Scott Reid at the bar where he worked and they teamed up with Goldie to make the band’s first songs. When life became busy, Reid passed the reins to Traill and the rest is history.

‘Idle Time’ brings their grunge-rock sound to the fore from the first moment. From the first moment, you are dropped into the movement of guitars and drums. While there is a push to the music, there is a lack of aggression which works really well with the message of the single. The rather steady movement of the music has you bopping to the rhythm and feeling the slightest urge to dance around to the sound. The melody doesn’t let up for a second and continues to urge you down the soundscape from start to finish. As you listen, you can easily imagine this song blaring out in concert with everyone getting into the melodic movement.

Fisher’s vocals call out over the melody with a really soothing flow. While there is a hit of grunge and alternative rock to his performance, the rather smooth delivery eases something in your chest. As you listen, you feel the urge to drop what you are doing and just relax back into the sound. This urge is amazing as it provides you with the moment of idle time that the lyrics remind us we all need. The spoken word vocals halfway through the track is an interesting addition that somehow makes the single even more engaging. Together with the melody, the vocals make you want to turn the sound up and rock out to the music while forgetting the world for a little while.

Black Borrachero urge us to take some time away from the rushed pace of the world through the soothing yet pushing grunge tones of ‘Idle Time’. The music is full-on as it pushes you down the soundscape and doesn’t let up for a second. As you feel the push of the music, the vocals soothe your senses and draw you into a moment away from the rest of the world.
