Bison Hip – Welcome To The Rest Of Your Life (2024)

Borne of a mid-life crisis, sort of…we think…not sure; what we do know is that Bison Hip is a drawing together of naturally talented dudes all born in the 1970s and 1980s. With a mutual love of blues and rock, the long-time friends came together to create music truly representative of life – vocalist Paul explains, “…between us, we’ve been through so many things in life, ups and downs, some successes and plenty of failures, we wanted all that in the music…” This is our introduction to Bison Hip, but they’ve been enthralling listeners since their 2022 debut EP Dear Greens and Blues. Today we take a gander at their most recent release, Welcome To The Rest Of Your Life.

Following the well-received single ‘Parasite’, which happens to be the second track on Welcome To The Rest Of Your Life, Bison Hip are ready to make waves with a powerful, immersive encapsulation of life. Breathing life into classic rock, the 11-track release is not merely nostalgic, it is a great yank of your soul back to yesteryear… a good yank. Growing up listening to Eric Clapton, The Commitments and Joe Cocker, I appreciate a good blues-rock tune when it comes on the radio, and that’s exactly what Bison Hip is: good blues-rock that requires a ground-shaking full-volume enjoyment.

While the majority of Welcome To The Rest Of Your Life has a toe-tapping, body-swaying rock tone to it, the band highlight diversity with songs like ‘The Bullfighter’. Instead of madness raining down in an ecstatic rock downpour, the album includes a sexier, softer and far more sensual sound; the type you expect at those smoky blues clubs that you know are dodgy but are so cool you don’t care.

A sophisticated production, the melody is smooth and elegant with rich instrumentation and Paul’s moving vocals; however, it is the live session intensity that transports you to a gig without leaving the comfort of your home. Finding a favourite track is difficult but I have to lean toward the heart-breaking ‘Take It Out On Me’. I’m not sure what your favourite will be but I’m certain we’ll agree that our lives are better for finding Bison Hip.
