Billie Skye – Fantasise (2024)

It is important to live in the present, reside in the now and take charge of reality as it is. This can be depressing, upsetting, and filled with resentment or rage; then again, it also leads to empowerment, self-discovery and change. This being said, there is nothing wrong with some daydreaming. To live in a world of fantasy, as Gene Wilder sings in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, you should take a step into a “world of pure imagination”. A step of escapism can save lives and Billie Skye guides you along a journey of dreams.

Hailing from Australia, the Byron Bay-based singer-songwriter is true to her name ‘Skye’ – to live in the sky and enjoy its fascination. Unlike some artists who pulsate with hard-hitting truths like an open wound demanding attention, sometimes for change and others just wanting to let it all out. No, Billie Skye’s intriguing sound is the band-aid on the wound, unafraid to live in wonderment and dedicated to universal love. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Fantasise’.

Following her well-received EP, Amorous Mirage, ‘Fantasise’ is a kaleidoscopic tapestry of RnB, pop and neo-soul. Composed with James Hamley, Billie Skye’s soothing vocals lay atop a charming flood of bold beats and wistful synths; however, while the melody is smooth and surreal, there is a hint of vulnerability coursing through the track. For me, Skye embraces you in the song but the abrupt ending seems to be her letting go giving you the freedom to fly in the fantasy. Bille Skye explains:

“To be in an introverted part of your life where reflection kills but also heals, books were my saving grace. To be able to pretend I was someone else for moments or in different dimensions, how incredible. I could be this saving grace, bad-ass woman who didn’t need anyone, who knew herself and what she wanted. I ebb and flow in such stark contrast that reality is almost whip lash…reality coming to get you, it will find you… This was not a love song…it was this imaginative state of awe and wonder at my own daydreaming capabilities…”
