Bill Abernathy – Hide Away (2023)
Fusing slivers of classic rock into Americana with a strong folk flair, singer-songwriter Bill Abernathy permeated the globe with his distinctive sound. For over a decade, US-based Abernathy has been breaking borders and defying stereotypes to win people’s hearts in a jovial but profound way. Fun and hard-hitting, Abernathy has an energetic confidence to ensnare senses but there is also a serious sweep in the classic rock tones. This is my introduction to this artist, so come along and jump into Abernathy’s critically acclaimed discography.
Following the success of his singles ‘Goodbye Will Never Come Again’ and ‘Cry Wolf’, ‘Hide Away’ is a powerful combination of rock, blues and folk in a raw rush of music. Known for his bold storytelling skills, Abernathy captures our imaginations with a mellifluous flow; however, just as there is an intense sincerity, the arrangement has intricate complexity. Bold guitars meld with steady drums in a harmonic swirl of sound building a typical rock sound. Yet, the blues guitar slivers through folk-rock swirls, reaching a crescendo soaring out with a classic rock flair. For me, however, it is the vocals that bring a special something to the track.
Taken off his full-length album More, ‘Hide Away’ stands out amidst the other tracks with its sinister edge. ‘More’ and ‘The 70s Were A Little Hard On Me’ present with a folksy charm and honest lyricism – but ‘Hide Away’ is far darker showcasing Abernathy’s versatility as an artist. Interestingly, while a bold rock theme flows through ‘Hide Away’, an eeriness weaves through with raw vocal execution. A little creepy, Abernathy draws you into a haunted sonic forest chilling you to the core; however, there is a warmth hiding behind the gruff ruggedness.
In addition to the single, Bill Abernathy released an official lyric video for ‘Hide Away’. You can view the video below and/or via Abernathy’s YouTube channel.
