Beth Olive – This World You’re Living In (2023)

With a reputation for profound heartfelt themes set to danceable earworm melodies, singer-songwriter Beth Olive can have you bopping along to a melancholic swirl of music. Hailing from Liverpool, the UK-based musician traipses areas of pop to indie-rock with comparisons to Taylor Swift and The 1975. This is my introduction to Beth Olive with her debut single hitting my virtual desk only recently, but she is already gaining praise on a global scale. Features on international blogs, radio stations and playlists see her loyal following grow far beyond her UK borders. Come with us as we delve into her intriguing discography.

Produced by alt-pop band BITTERS front-woman Claudia Mills, ‘This World You’re Living In’ is an eclectic arrangement of dream-pop with strong indie-pop vibes flushing through the textured melody. Setting you adrift on a pop-inspired sonic river, ‘This World You’re Living In’ has a charming elegance holding you in a warm embrace. The thing is, while the contemporary pop sound is the prominent tone lifting you into a smooth gentle flow by the end, the beginning is not so simple.

Bold electronic beats pierce the jovial cheer of pop denting it with a harsh staccato like a dangerous moth flitting beneath wanting to break through… but it disappears, and Olive carries us off on her warm vocals. Not only does this show outstanding production skills by Mills but also Olive’s innovative sound.

Proving that sad music can be hopeful and calm without any anxious melancholy, ‘This World You’re Living In’ oozes vulnerability but in a jovial, tender way. In an intimate single, Olive explains that “I wrote this song about not feeling good enough for someone that you can’t help but put on a pedestal… however, I wanted to convey the message that it really doesn’t matter because everyone deserves and will find someone who can value you in the same way.”

Sincere, sentimental and introspective, Beth Olive stands out as a gem in a pool of sonic pebbles with her debut single ‘This World You’re Living In’.
