Ben Hemming – London Fog (2025)
It’s said – or at least on his Spotify, that is – that Ben Hemming didn’t find the blues, it found him. Borne of a hum-drum, rat-race, “is this all there is” attitude, singer-songwriter Ben Hemming left the bad behind and went searching for a change in the USA. Travelling across the States, the Englishman discovered much that would influence his life, particularly developing a passion for blues. Skip ahead some, and the UK-based Hemming shares his enchanting music with the masses offering solace, comfort, and a warm embrace in each of his melodies. Join us as we delve into his latest release, ‘London Fog’.
Following his well-received ‘Praise Me’ and ‘The Curse’, Hemming enters 2025 with his new single ‘London Fog’. Shifting from a strong alternative rock flavour in ‘Praise Me’ and ‘The Curse’, Hemming showcases a softer, smoother, more Americana-inspired side to his personality. A concoction of soaring guitars, pulsating drums, and a bold bass, ‘London Fog’ exudes duality with its smooth gentleness, but a hard-hitting blast of tragic vulnerability.
While the melody is a pleasant listening experience, I find Hemming’s music highly expressive of not only a theme but with vivid imagery. Almost capturing the thick greyness seen when London’s fog veils its streets, ‘London Fog’ lays heavy on your heart. Yet, as much as the despair of another blasted foggy day exists, lingering warmth and whimsy bring that jovial side of “so, it’s foggy but it’s really pretty as well”.
The instrumentation is astounding as it presses against your chest and ensnares your senses, but it is Hemming’s dulcet vocals enhancing the ebb and flow of light and dark in ‘London Fog’. Rich, confident and charming, his vocals hold your hand as you navigate the intricate tune. An old friend leading you toward the bright firelight in a stuffy London pub – absolutely marvellous and somewhat magical. If this is my introduction to Ben Hemming, I cannot wait for more from this natural talent.
