Following the well-received debut single ‘Bloom’, Bella Deer adopts a darker mix of alternative pop with indie-pop sensibilities. As with ‘Bloom’, a strong sense of melancholy slivers through a synth-driven melody. Yet, the upbeat tone of her previous material slips away exposing despair through the harmonic keyboard, bold beats and magical guitar.
One aspect I find intriguing about ‘Care Too Much’ is how the ethereal soundscape is a string of sounds, but the pure vocals bring heartfelt simplicity to the track. Using a raw narrative, Bella Deer’s soulful vocals pierce the melody but in a soothing manner. Recorded and produced with musician Joel Quartermain, the song intriguingly weaves the theme into the music. An oscillation between light and dark, bright and basic, soothing and gruff, ‘Care Too Much’ is about choosing between two things that cannot co-exist.
