Belén Vivero – Soy Alguien Más (2021)

Ranging from professional ice skating to musical composition, Belén Vivero is a soulful artist taking on the world. Having attended the National Conservatory of Equador and the Berklee College of Music in Spain, the multi-instrumentalist combines classical training with modern beats. Now based in Los Angeles, the Equador native continues to create music as a singer-songwriter. The latest addition to her award-winning discography is ‘Soy Alguien Más’.

Now well-versed in languages, I literally have no idea what people are saying unless they speak English or Afrikaans (and even Afrikaans is a push). Despite my linguistic deficiency, I do know understanding can be achieved if the tone and context are correct. Pouring her soul into her music, Vivero transcends lingual boundaries in her new song ‘Soy Alguien Más’ invoking a feeling rather than a literal understanding.

Reminiscent of Carolina Deslandes and Luisa Sobral, Belén Vivero merges contemporary pop with soulful jazz. Combining soft instrumentation with soothing vocals, ‘Soy Alguien Más’ is a cascade of harmonic melodies. Yet, while the buoyancy of the track is well represented in the toe-tapping melody, it is Vivero’s voice that truly captivates one.

Within the cheery jazziness of the Salvador Sobral-esque sound, Vivero elegantly executes intimate lyricism in a laidback manner. Slightly cheeky, with a bit of a sensual streak, her warm vocals wrap you in a warm blanket making you shiver with delight. While not a heady or otherworldly song, ‘Soy Alguien Más’ does have an elegance showcasing robustness and fragility in the track. Overall, like I say I have no idea what she is saying but it certainly puts a smile on my face.
