Beebee and the Bluebirds – The World of the Witch (2024)

Driven by the essence of creativity, Beebee and the Bluebirds emphatically agree that “music doesn’t lie”. You might be a skilled fibber lying with exquisite ease, but raw emotion and opinions can ooze through melodies – whether it is entirely unconscious or deliberate. Inspired by humanity, from the gritty to the wholesome shining bits, the Icelandic quartet enchant listeners with beautifully but brutally honest music.

Formed in 2010 by Brynhildur Oddsdóttir, Beebee and the Bluebirds quickly gained a reputation as an authentic, original, innovative and energetic group in Iceland. Along with critically acclaimed albums and singles, their eclectic sound has earned a spot on the international recognition touring across Iceland and Sweden, reaching audiences far beyond their Icelandic borders, featuring on international radio stations and publications, and performing at notable festivals including the Icelandic Blues festival and Reykjavik Guitarama. Today, we take a gander at their most recent release, ‘The World of the Witch’.

Following the well-received 2023 single ‘Fine before’, ‘The World of the Witch’ takes Beebee and the Bluebirds in another direction on their musical journey. Shifting from a signature jazz/blues sound, ‘The World of the Witch’ hits you between the eyes with powerful classic rock. Showcasing their influences of Jimi Hendrix, Halestorm and Royal Blood, the band thrust you into a kaleidoscopic sonic hurricane flooded with pounding drums, scorching guitars, a heavy bassline and forceful keys.

Recorded and produced with Jóhann Āsmundsson at Studio Paradis, Brynjar Páll Bjórnsson (bass), Halldór Sveinsson (keyboard) and Āsmunder Jóhannson (drums) create a high-voltage, heart-wrenching, breath-taking musical bubble; however, it is Oddsdóttir’s electric guitar and vocals that take ‘The World of the Witch’ to another level. Her forceful guitar and voice push the bad-ass theme of strength and empowerment with overwhelming zest. She explains, “The song… is about rising up from your pain and using it as fuel. An anthem for women who have shared the same experience…”
