BAZL – Speak Slow (2024)
Sauntering across various degrees and styles of pop, then flicking a little bit of soul here and RnB there, BAZL is as elegant as he is soulful. Dragging us back to the nostalgic 90s pop, there is a retro feel to BAZL; however, the Australia-based musician jams melodies with contemporary sounds making it familiar but undeniably fresh. This is my introduction to BAZL, but I am not the only one paying attention. From France and the UK to the USA, Brazil and Australia, BAZL is described as versatile, bold and polished. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Speak Slow’.
The first single since 2022’s well-received ‘S.o.s’, BAZL dips further into the pool of pop in his new track ‘Speak Slow’. As I mentioned, BAZL can tap into nostalgic sounds with a modern-day flair, and this is true in ‘Speak Slow’. Tapping into Michael Jackson’s 90s era but slicked with hints of Charlie Puth and Joji, the melody is soothing, moving and laidback in its pop gleam. Yet, while the gentle calm persists in ‘Speak Slow’, an upbeat bounce permeates enhancing the complexity of what appears a simple song.
Penned as a song “about a one-night stand that turned into a four-night stand”, the highs and lows of the melody might express the high and low emotions experienced. Soulful rhythms ooze sensuality, while strong beats capture the underlying ferocity. It is the theme song for those moments where a hand delicately strokes an arm, a finger lifts a cheek, lips touch lightly hinting at a kiss and one becomes lost in the hypnotic seduction of this passionate embrace.
You can easily become lost in the melody of ‘Speak Slow’, particularly with its intoxicating vivaciousness; however, BAZL proves he is a poet as well as a singer. Elegantly taking us through the nights of passion, BAZL captures the core of lust and sensuality in the lyrics; however, a sheen of vulnerability lies in the carnal descriptions. Think about it, in almost any embrace there is a hint of fragility woven within the forceful lust – BAZL brings this to the fore in his sensual lyricism and husky vocals.
