Bass Race – Crystal Paradise (2021)

The honeymoon phase of a relationship can be a whirlwind where the rest of the world seems to fall away. Bass Race have bottled this feeling and moulded it into their single ‘Crystal Paradise’. Written in the early stages of their own relationship, it burns with the all-consuming ecstasy of falling in love and the feeling of shutting the rest of the world out as you ride the euphoric waves of emotion.

Part of their debut album Tender Vittles, the single is a great introduction to their rich sound. The musical partnership of Steven Mertens and Laura Benack began in 2010 when they also started dating. With a careful balance of influences and tones, they create multi-faceted music that travels through time and space.

‘Crystal Paradise’ hits you with engaging beats and breathing synths. From the first moment, you are inundated with melodic layers that create a river of sound. The current of the melody grabs you and pulls you further and further into the soundscape. There is a genre-defying vibe to the music as the horns bring a fun edge to the consuming melody. As you listen, you are covered by the music and have no way of getting out of its grasp. This is perfect as the beauty of the music makes you want to rest in it forever.

The layering of the song continues with the vocals as the duo blends their voices together. The vocal performance has a rather hypnotic vibe that pulls at your consciousness while filling you with the bliss of falling in love. There is a touch of metaphor woven into the lyrics that bring an almost dreamy feeling of introspection to the single. The higher vocals that come through later in the single enhance this dreaminess but there is a velveteen flow that you can’t help but be drawn to.

Bass Race fills you with the euphoria of falling in love while sinking into the all-consuming melody of ‘Crystal Paradise’. With a dreamy edge, the single has you sinking into a river of emotion while covered in layered melodics. The vocals blend to form a solid yet dual-toned thread of velveteen ribbon that mesmerises your senses.
