Barry Muir – Home In A New York Minute (2023)
With several decades of musical magic behind him, singer-songwriter Barry Muir is one of those musicians you want to be. Beginning at age 20 (almost) in Canada, Muir started in the local indie scene but soon grew from a minnow to a shark in the sonic ocean. From playing bass for several musical projects as a youngster to his now masterful veteran status, Muir has performed with notable bands like the Payola$, Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts, and The Blue Shadows. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and, as Muir says, “…it’s usually a bittersweet moment and an ending to brotherly camaraderie formed over the years”. This does not, however, mean sitting back and letting the music pass you by; no, not at all. Come with us as we delve into Barry Muir’s solo project.
Following the overwhelming success of Muir’s album Gentle, ‘Home In A New York Minute’ intertwines alternative rock with country and a tinge of folk-pop traipsing along the arrangement. Soft and soothing, ‘Home In A New York Minute’ is ultimately a love song embracing you in a warm hug. Yet, while the song is gentle and charming, the powerful guitar sends a slice of rock edginess through the arrangement. So, you can easily place Muir on a dimly lit stage serenading the audience with his rich vocals and intoxicating them with each chord.
Taken from the album In The Meantime, ‘Home In A New York Minute’ is a musical expression of that old saying: “home in a New York minute”. Said to have originated in Texas comparing the laidback Texan life with the chaotic high-paced New York one, the saying looks at moving on at a crazy quick speed. When speaking about the single, Muir explains that “it fits the song’s storyline perfectly when the singer finds himself in Texas only to realise he’s left everything behind in Buffalo and can’t get home quick enough.”
Sincere and heart-warming, ‘Home In A New York Minute’ captures the desire to return from whence you came and embrace all the goodness at home.
