Barleycove – Forget You (2023)

Let me tell you a story. Nine years ago, a young singer-songwriter named Laura Jones was playing a gig at a local coffee shop in South Carolina. A gentleman named Tim Trammell happened to be there and he and his wife stayed for the set. Tim Trammell approached Laura Jones asking if she needed a drummer. This was the serendipitous origins of the indie duo Barleycove.

Since the day in 2012, Barleycove has had some line-up changes but the heart behind the music always remained. From their debut album Release in 2014 to single ‘Bread & Circuses’ in 2022 and 2023’s EP Fairytales, Jones and Trammell have turned heads with a constantly evolving sound. Described as “mesmerising” and bringing an “incredible atmosphere and potent messaging”, Barleycove has a reputation for moving, honest and intoxicating melodies. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Forget You’.

Following the five-track EP Fairytales, Barleycove shifts from an indie-folk sound to something, well, far more experimental in ‘Forget You’. With an aim of being “genre-less”, the duo showcase diversity not only from song to song but within a single melody. Stepping into a realm of cinematic soundscapes with soothing synths, ‘Forget You’ has a mellifluous dream pop vibe carrying listeners off on a sonic river. Yet, while tranquillity washes over you, a hint of trip-hop pricks through the kaleidoscopic haze.

Just as ‘Forget You’ can see you off on that wistful sonic river, the profound lyricism gives you a kick – just like the trip-hop prick. Barleycove explains that “this song is about moving along quickly when dating when you see the red flags and realise you need to forget them and move on.” We can become lost in the innocent haze of love but ‘Forget You’ brims with vulnerability, melancholy with a sense of resilience when hit by a troubling revelation – all wrapped in a four-minute song.

In addition to the single, Barleycove has released an official lyric video for ‘Forget You’. This video can be viewed below or via their YouTube channel.
