Bad Mother Nature – Hawks, Doves and Gamblers (2022)

Since their formation six years ago (give or take), US-based quartet Bad Mother Nature has steadily been establishing itself on the California scene. Performing at numerous notable venues like Ace of Spades and The Viper Room, as well as festivals like Concerts In The Park, Bad Mother Nature has a reputation for energetic and engaging gigs. This is my introduction to the four-piece, but they are already turning heads across the blogosphere. The latest addition to their well-received discography is ‘Hawks, Doves and Gamblers’.

Described by Columna Magazine, as a band that manages to “move as many people as The Eagles…”, Bad Mother Nature brings an originality to the country-rock scene. In ‘Hawks, Doves and Gamblers’, the group reach back to rock and roll of yesteryear bringing it to modern-day audiences. Melodically arranging dynamic guitars, drums and piano, ‘Hawks, Doves and Gamblers’ is a toe-tapping tune that will ensnare your mind and senses. The impressive guitar solo needs a particular mention as the riffs adds an edginess to the smooth melody.

Approximately one year since their well-received album Heavysong, Bad Mother Nature shows they are not only melodically awesome but have a lyrical depth. Inspired by drummer Jon McCann’s service in Afghanistan and the recent war in Ukraine, the lads take on the controversial theme of war and peace in ‘Hawks, Doves and Gamblers’. The wry critique of “people who endlessly gamble with war and peace”, this new single slides sardonic lyrics over a tight rock melody. Interesting thing is, while it has a provocative underlying theme, the melody is charming, smooth and poetic.

Sophisticated, elegant and sincere in their sentimental music, Bad Mother Nature has won our hearts with ‘Hawks, Doves and Gamblers’. I cannot wait for their upcoming EP A Thousand Says of Desert Rain and Madness.
