Bad Mother Nature – Excuses (2022)

Known for their energetic, engaging and enthusiastic live performances, the US-based rock group Bad Mother Nature have built a strong following on a regional level. However, their powerful presence in the blogosphere means their fanbase is going way beyond the borders of the USA. Featured on notable blogs like Curious For Music, Roadie Music, Come Here Floyd, and various playlists, Bad Mother Nature is making its way across the globe. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Excuses’.

Following their controversial song ‘Hawks, Doves and Gamblers’, Bad Mother Nature take on another reflective theme – the validation of seemingly negative character traits. From subjects like war and peace, the lads turn inward and touch on how a person “…justifies things like laziness and alcoholism with the tired reasoning of someone who’s lost all motivation to justify their pitfalls…” Now, some people may call this expression of “well, that’s the way it is and that’s that” provocative, leaning away from expected societal aspirations. Then again, Bad Mother Nature isn’t always adhering to expected societal anything.

Along with the aimless laziness and addiction, ‘Excuses’ touches on the “ceaseless push and pull of relationships”. The poetic lyricism explores this “dangerous game” called love and its nihilistic tendencies, as well as the easy escape when things become a little too serious. The line “I don’t think I’ll be around when the water gets too deep” eloquently illustrates the “abandoning ship when justifications finally run out.”

Weaving a thread of indie-rock through an old-school folk-rock sound, Bad Mother Nature brings a nostalgic flair to this modern-day single. Moreover, the piano adds a soulful sprinkle to ‘Excuses’ – particularly when it takes hold of the melody near the end. What I love is how the song appears to be toe-tapping and jovial, but the rich vocals have a desperate exhaustion in their tone. It appears that life is too much, too difficult and too tiring to deal with, and just leave it alone.

Sincere, sentimental and soul-stirring, Bad Mother Nature leave you breathless with their new single ‘Excuses’.
