Bad Mother Nature – A Thousand Days (2023)
With several regional tours, three albums and numerous singles under their belt, US-based Bad Mother Nature is a band set for stardom. Electric performances with engaging melodies (both on and off the stage) are astounding audiences across the globe, or at least within their US borders. Covering every flavour of rock from Americana to indie, the hard-hitting foursome shows diversity in their unique sound. Come with me as we delve into their tunes.
The final track on their most recent EP, A Thousand Days of Desert Rain and Madness, ‘A Thousand Days’ wraps a variety of sounds in an enticing sonic package. As with the majority of tracks on the five-track EP, Bad Mother Nature leans toward a folk-inspired sound with ‘A Thousand Days’. Opening with a soothing, sincere sound, we are led into old-school type folk with tinges of indie-rock floating through the melody. Yet, as we become used to the charming guitars and drums, a bold guitar crescendo leads us to a hard-hitting rock tone. Even more interesting is how this layer of hard rock flits across the folk as if there is a struggle between the two. Drums roll and pound, guitars fight with dynamic riffs, and a piano is heard in the back adding a different dimension to the song.
While the melody includes that power struggle within the arrangement, it seems the “rockier” side of things takes over. It stands tall lording over all the sounds as folk trudges off during the piano-driven end. It reminds me of those Spaghetti Westerns with the fight at the OK Corral and the ultimate take-down of Wyatt Earp by Billy The Kid.
‘A Thousand Days’ may be an exciting theme to a Clint Eastwood Western but there is something far deeper beneath the surface. Touching on themes of isolation and loneliness, the vocals shudder between melancholy and fragility with their folk-tinged tones. The overarching premise is to “seek order out of chaos or finding light in the dark, the culminating line in the chorus resolves that all the chaos of the world led me to water every time I lost my way” …perhaps Earp won instead of Billy The Kid? Either way, the movement from one style to the other presents an organised madness in a crazy world.
