Bad Ass Beauty – 4 Horsemen (2023)

Influenced by acts like Chaka Khan and Led Zeppelin, US-based Bad Ass Beauty brings powerhouse soul vocals to forceful rock with a unique nostalgic flair. The solo project of singer-songwriter LaQuinta Prince, Bad Ass Beauty is exactly what it says on the tin – a badass beauty. With style and confidence, she tackles provocative issues like misogyny, sexual harassment, misrepresentation, difficult family relationships, hardship, disappointment, and many other hard-hitting topics. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘4 Horseman’.

Hot on the heels of her well-received debut track ‘Me’, ‘4 Horseman’ is another blast of musical genius from her upcoming album 4 Horsemen (set for release in autumn 2023). As with ‘Me’, a strong leaning toward classic rock comes to the fore with the new single. The Led Zeppelin influence can be heard from the first chord with a hard-hitting guitar driving the powerful melody. Yet, while pounding drums join the guitars, it is Prince’s vocals that bring the ”bad ass” style.

Elegantly traipsing across the instrumentation, Prince’s voice has an urgency in its vivid vivacity. I could compare her to a combination of Aretha Franklin, Joan Jett and Alanis Morrissette; however, there is a sliver of masterful rock bringing a completely unique, inimitable sound whenever Prince opens her mouth. A style that is, I suppose, utterly Bad Ass Beauty.

While the melody has you jumping about, twirling and singing at the top of your lungs, it is not only an awesome tune. Along with the passionate instrumentation, particularly the guitar, ‘4 Horsemen’ has a profound, dramatic, bold theme. Prince explains that ‘4 Horsemen’ is “…chaotic…putting it bluntly, I disassociate to deal with this crazy fucking life! This is a song introducing these four different personalities to the world. Writing and recording this song was a completely cathartic experience as it was the first time I was actually able to admit it out loud and acknowledge this was how I choose to handle trauma…”
