Backstrom – Train Wreck Coming (2024)
Many artists we come across leave strong impressions on our team, but one that seems to be jumping off the page demanding our attention over the past few weeks is Backstrom. When we left the Swedish artist, review-wise at least, he slid into our ears with the well-received single ‘The Journey’. An entrancing swirl of folk-rock and country whipping our heads about with abruptness, as well as a country charm. We are not the only ones whose heads have been turned as Backstrom receives critical acclaim on an international scale. Come with us as we delve into his single ‘Train Wreck Coming’.
Technically a solo project, Backstrom is the only “band member”; however, this is only technically. A diverse collaboration of various session musicians, Backstrom has worked with artists like guitarist Luca Gionnnotti, multi-instrumentalist Fransisco Paz, and vocalists Kimberly Faith and Bart Topher. ‘Train Wreck Coming’ once again enlists the natural talent of Fransisco Paz and Bart Topher. A truly international collaboration, the instruments were recorded in Buenos Aires, the vocals were added with US-based Bart Topher, soulful harmonies by Singtrece, and producer Gabe Wolf mixed and mastered the single.
Drawing together elements of country, jazz and soul, ‘Train Wreck Coming’ is a smooth blast of bold Americana. Topher’s gruff vocals add the Chris Stapleton flair to this country single; however, it is Singtrece’s soulful harmonies that splash a smattering of old-school soul within a folk-rock lilt. Interestingly, while ‘Train Wreck Coming’ has straightforward country energy, its combination of crashing guitars, forceful drums and hard-hitting vocals hit you from every side. Think of being lost in a kaleidoscopic hurricane while remaining anchored by the groovy vibes and tender lyricism.
“I think this song is energetic rhythmic and fun but at the same time, there’s a deeper thought behind it. There’s a lot of crazy “woke” things going on in the world at the moment and the lyrics reflect that but I prefer to leave the interpretation to the listener.” – Backstrom on ‘Train Wreck Coming’
