B-MACK – Silent Witness (2024)
Many bands hit our virtual desk daily but there are few that leave a permanent stamp on our brains. Amidst a mire of music-filled emails, it is the unique, original and completely different artists that shine bright and stick. B-MACK is one of these artists. The brainchild of singer-songwriter Bruce Mack, B-MACK has a reputation for energetic, enthusiastic and intoxicating performances; and let’s not forget the intriguing releases we happily hear online.
Funk, blues, psychedelic rock, soul, classic rock – it is difficult to describe B-MACK’s style. Not ones to be pigeon-holed, Brain Mack (vocals and keys), Michael R. Cox (electric bass), Ben Tyree (guitar) and Chris Eddleton (drums) create a melting pot of music tossing in everything but the kitchen sink. Alongside the groove-heavy single ‘Duckgrease Burning At The Crabhouse’, the group present the “funk-inspired” track ‘Silent Witness’.
Recorded at Cox’s Devi Recording Studio, ‘Silent Witness’ tips at a slight ska style slivering through a glorious groove of funk and soul. One of the follow-up tunes to 2021 singles ‘Throw My Hands Up’ and ‘Ugly Head’, ‘Silent Witness’ is perfectly layered yet a singularity exists with each instrument giving it prominence while coming together in a harmonic symphony. Tyree’s guitar solo breathes life into a rock-inspired movement with a groovy pinch of ska encouraging a soulful reggae beat beneath. Shifting from dark and profound to light-hearted calm, listening to ‘Silent Witness’ is like taking a ride across a sonic rollercoaster, but a chilled-out vibe makes the ride less terrifying.
Intimate and sincere, the melody can be enjoyed on its own, however, the lyricism executed by Mack’s obscure vocals makes it more complex. He explains:
“The song is about living in the moment, enjoying the good times the universe has brought to you, but paying close attention to all a moment has to offer including signs, strange occurrences, vibrations and energies irrelevant to that of the space which you are in at that particular moment. It is about keeping one’s intuitive survival skills in tune.”
