Azileli – In This House (2023)
The brainchild of producer, vocalist and visual artist Eliza Willmott, Azileli has been described by Mystic Sons as “…one of the more heartfelt names on the rise right now.” This is my introduction to Azileli, but the UK-based musician has impressed audiences since her debut ‘Unreal’ in 2017. Since then, she has released several singles and two EPs to much critical acclaim. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘In This House’.
Following her collaborative projects with King Monday in 2022, ‘In This House’ has a softer, gentler and more soothing tone to the melody. A folk-inspired undertone is heard on ‘In This House’ almost reminiscent of Elliot Page’s single ‘Anyone Else But You’, but with a pop-tinged edge to the track. Lizzy McAlpine springs to mind with Azileli’s soft vocals and the song’s dreamy ambience. Interestingly enough, while I can make these comparisons, Azileli appears to have something inimitable about her – like something I could identify but can’t quite put my finger on…although I don’t really mind as you can become lost in ‘In This House’ with ease.
Interestingly enough, while a folk meets commercial pop vibe exists in ‘In This House’, it is not a highly upbeat song. Its chilled-out demeanour has a groovy lilt, with Azileli’s dulcet tones fitting in so naturally; however, the song has a vulnerability in its neat little folk package. Azileli explains that ‘In This House” was written and produced”…after leaving a difficult relationship when I was emotionally tender and I had no choice but to be honest with myself. It’s about when living feels like dying and stoking the embers of the hopeful part of you that chooses to live.”
So, what do I think of Azileli and ‘In This House’? Simplistic, but with a dreamy haziness to take you to another realm of being. Soft and tender, but with a heartfelt pain that hits you right in the middle of your chest. Overall, I love it and cannot wait for more from Azileli.
