Aza Brown – For Real? (2022)

Rising to prominence in the 1990s, singer-songwriter Aaron Brown (also known as Aza Brown) has experience in a plethora of genres. Originally beginning his music career as part of the 90s group The Dazy Age, Brown peppered the 90s with their unique sound. After splitting in 1997, he went to form The Chasers in 2001 and is currently singing in The WonderWhys. Does this make him a music veteran? I mean, he has been on the scene for over a decade. Anyway, despite his experience in groups Brown chose to embrace a solo career after 15 years hiatus from original music. We take a look at his single ‘For Real?’.

Tinged with the sounds of the Beatles, Jellyfish, David Bowie and The Verve, ‘For Real?’ has an upbeat, buoyant melody. Soothing and smooth, Brown immediately sends you into a kaleidoscopic swirl of sound. Plus, the joviality of the smooth melody sends happy vibes down your spine making the track highly entertaining. In fact, after only a few seconds I had a smile plastered on my face while tapping my toe to ‘For Real?’. Laidback and easy, one would assume there is a light-hearted lyrical content; however, this is not the case.

Not one to sing songs without any deeper meaning, ‘For Real?’ touches on the existential concept of existing in a mundane and futile society. While the uptempo melody is entertaining, it is the content that highlights Brown’s deeper connection with a contemporary audience. The thing is, while the song incorporates a poignant theme, the lively melody highlights his desire to share optimistic empowerment with people offering a light at the end of the tunnel.

“’For Real?’ is an uptempo, uplifting anti-establishment rant about the futility of modern living and escaping the rat race… Far from being just a voyeuristic moan though, I’m offering encouragement to those who can stand in the face of fear and look at what life offers on the other side if you have the courage to take the plunge.” – Aza Brown on ‘For Real?’

Addictive, anthemic and smile-inducing, Aza Brown’s ‘For Real?’ is a song I can easily have on repeat.
