Awild Mind – Boys Of The Choir (2024)

Capturing raw emotion in moving melodies, singer-songwriter Awild Mind brings sanity to chaotic reality with the power of music. Based in Ireland, there is a personal intimacy and empathetic touch to Awild Mind’s songs, or at least one song according to Spotify. This is my introduction to the artist but despite his limited discography, Awild Mind reaches far beyond his Irish borders. Featuring on playlists, radio stations and publications across Europe, he might be a minnow amidst a sonic pool of sharks; but what a shining minnow he is! Join me as we take a listen to his debut single ‘Boys Of The Choir’.

Produced at Jam Studios by Martin Quinn, ‘Boys Of The Choir’ is an eclectic blend of indie-pop, folk and indie-rock bound in a shimmering sonic wrapper. Sprinkling his magical music dust across the song, Quinn finds the line between sophisticated elegance and raw naivety in the arrangement. A concoction of bold drums, soaring guitars and interspersed keyboards breathe life into an electric indie-pop tune; however, just as a synthetic blend exudes from ‘Boys Of The Choir’, the bold percussion stands tall capturing organic vulnerability in the forceful song.

The melody is inspiring as it lifts your soul, warms your heart, and has you twirling about five feet off the floor – not literally, but it certainly feels like you’re flying. Interestingly, it is not the instrumentation that keeps you up there; it is Awild Mind’s unique vocals. Almost leaning toward a rap-esque stance, the poetic lyrics are spoken word and conversational. The Irish lilt brings another intriguing aspect, so the narrative is Awild Mind sitting you down and sharing captivating folk stories by the light of a roaring fire.

Sincere, sentimental and introspective, ‘Boys Of The Choir’ intricately weaves the lyrical “complexities of life – its stress, the weight of nostalgia…” through a masterful sonic tapestry. My one complaint: it’s too short; three minutes doesn’t seem long enough to enjoy Awild Mind’s Irish charm. If this debut single is anything to go by, I cannot wait for more from Awild Mind!
