Awaiting Abigail – I Hate You (2024)
Four ladies, two gents, and an outstanding rush of hard rock, Awaiting Abigail is the sweet kid sitting at the back of the classroom hiding a rebellious streak behind a cheeky smile. Over the past few months, the US-based sextet continue to knock at our virtual door and damn we’re happy to welcome them into our world. From the well-received single ‘Falling Under’ to ‘Bad Mind’, Awaiting Abigail has intrigued us. Today, we take a gander at another of their singles with ‘I Hate You’.
Given the positive glow I seem to have created in the last few lines, you’d probably think I’m a little biased when it comes to Awaiting Abigail; I assure you, I’ll try to keep the fangirl aside in this review. Following ‘Falling Under’, ‘I Hate You’ retains that line between Halestorm and The Pretty Reckless, but with an attitude quickly becoming unique to Awaiting Abigail.
In a hypnotic combination of crashing drums, scorching guitars, dynamic bass and shimmering keyboard, ‘I Hate You’ is a kaleidoscopic rush of hard rock melodic insanity. Then again, bouncing off the pillar-to-post musical thrashing, a slip of symphonic unity acts as an anchor encapsulating the madness in a heartfelt bubble.
Similar to previous Awaiting Abigail songs, ‘I Hate You’ retains the rambunctious nature of a rebel, but there appears to be something slightly different in its overall execution, particularly the lyricism. ‘Bad Mind’, ‘Falling Under’ and ‘People Pleaser’ have a sophisticated rounding to the overall delivery; however, ‘I Hate You’ is a theme song to Mean Girls with its quick background chat revelling in the nastiness of a bully. Awaiting Abigail explains:
“…a grooving tune with a heavy 6/4 halftime breakdown for the chorus announcing displeasure at the catty, gossiping, rumour drama of school or workplace. In the end, the bully gets her own punctuated by the outro guitar solo and a pounding closing rant.”
Not sincere or sentimental, ‘I Hate You’ is the brash, honest, cut-to-the-quick tackle of bullying. For me, the title may be ‘I Hate You’, but who could hate Awaiting Abigail? I mean, c’mon, seriously, there’s too much to love.
