Awaiting Abigail – Bad Mind
A couple of weeks ago, I came across a hard rock group with such infectiousness their music has been on repeat to the point that they’re overtaking my current binge of Evanescence – and they only have four songs in their discography. The band is US-based Awaiting Abigail, and my introduction was the song ‘Falling Under’. Entwining hard-hitting forcefulness with delicate lyricism, Awaiting Abigail oscillates between dark and light in their profound melodies. Join me as I delve into another of their singles, ‘Bad Mind’.
The 2024 debut single from Awaiting Abigail, ‘Bad Mind’ is a glittery sonic concoction of crashing drums, a pulsating bass, scorching guitars, glistening keys, and frontwoman Abigail Hill’s gritty vocals. As with their singles ‘I Hate You’, ‘People Pleaser’ and ‘Falling Under’, listening to ‘Bad Mind’ is like being tossed into the eye of a tremendous sonic hurricane. In a head-whipping rush of hard rock music, Mike Tolfa (guitar), James Smith (guitar), Laurie Barnett (bass), Heather Hammonds (drums), and Kari Tolfa (keys) fill your lungs with the powerful sound but simultaneously knock the wind out of you with its forceful nature.
Melodically, Awaiting Abigail’s music is intoxicating with vivid vibrancy adding an almost palpable mania to the listening experience. The thing is, while ‘Bad Mind’ has a tumultuousness to it, the lyricism is far less chaotic. Poignant and profound, Awaiting Abigail tackles the grit and glory of reality; in ‘Bad Mind’, they look at mental health from the suffocating fall to the overcoming light. The band explain:
“Built on a heavy 7/4 groove and a halftime breakdown for the chorus, this tune is an anthem for overcoming mental illness. The catchy lyrics and straight-ahead-in-your-face riffs pound this message home, while the lighter verses reflect on how it got that bad.”
Most bands make a strong impression on our team, and few remain unforgettable. Awaiting Abigail is one of the few.
In addition to the single, Awaiting Abigail released an unofficial music video for ‘Bad Mind’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
