Avresa – Short Sighted (2024)

‘Avresa’ – a word that, I’ll admit, I was certain was made up as a band name; how wrong I was. Not commonly heard outside of Sweden, it translates to “a departure for the beginning of a journey”; perfect given it acts as the moniker of Australia-based singer-songwriter Jeremy Binger’s solo project. Shifting from an alternative rock band to more intimate individuality and originality, Avresa binds several flavours of rock in this new direction. A couple of years ago, we were introduced to Avresa with the singles ‘Follow Through’ and ‘Leave It All’. Today, we take a gander (and a listen) to his most recent single, ‘Short Sighted’.

Following the well-received full-length album Perspective, ‘Short Sighted’ is a hard-hitting drag back to the 1990s with its rock-tinted swirl of sound. A strong alternative rock is evident, but heavier slices of hard rock rush through, while a slip of pop-rock peeks beneath the arrangement. Self-penned and produced, Avresa’s music showcases Binger’s sophistication as a composer; however, there remains a naïve rawness within its elegant arrangement. The overall union of pounding drums, bold bass, and scorching guitar is phenomenal, yet duality exists with each instrument demanding attention in its individuality… then the fusion to a harmonic symphony.

The melody itself is intriguing offering its nostalgic whiff of Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox Twenty, but the lyricism is what ups the ante – at least, for me. In his rich, warm, weighty vocals, ‘Short Sighted’ is not merely a literal title; rather, it explores the deeper, more complex associations with the term. Avresa explains:

“On one level, it refers to being short-sighted and lacking foresight… on another level, the title also nods to the financial world where ‘short’ positions represent betting against something for quick profit. This mirrors the song’s themes of recklessness, greed and an impending storm… the song is a reflection on how easily we can ignore warnings and repeat our mistakes…”

In addition to the single, Avresa released an official lyric video for ‘Short Sighted’. The video can be viewed below or on Avresa’s YouTube channel.
