avOva ft. Nalarie – Indigo (2024)
Atmospheric, dreamy, ethereal and emotionally expansive, electronic act avOva brings a haunting intensity to their downtempo tunes. Capturing the core of the “Bristol Sound” but adding a contemporary flair to the tone, the UK-based project is refreshingly new with a comfortable familiarity. While this appears to be avOva’s debut single, at least on streaming platforms, the group is hardly a shrinking violet in the music scene. From their native UK to Portugal, Brazil, France and the USA, this non-conventional act astounds listeners near and far. Come with us as we jump headfirst into the single ‘Indigo’.
Collaborating with singer-songwriter Nalarié, avOva’s ‘Indigo’ is an elegant linking of downtempo electronica and commercial pop. When the song first slipped onto my virtual desk, I was unsure what to expect; however, I was pleasantly surprised by the intricate duality of the track. The soothing synths and beats are not forceful while still holding an underlying forcefulness in its whisper. Confident and warm, ‘Indigo’ places you in a hypnotic sonic bubble as Nalarié caresses you with a skin-chilling tingle. Then again, the interspersed shout “break” in its harshness pulsates like an unwanted stab in the gut.
An intriguing melody fusing bass-heavy tones with traditional instrumentation – I think I hear the soft voice of a piano – avOva are at the front of a trip-hop/electropop revolution. Yet, just as the melody is interesting, the moving lyricism ups the ante. Penned with Nalarié, the lyrics carry a vulnerable weight exploring a loss of trust, self-doubt, turmoil and confusion. Nalarié’s hypnotic vocals elegantly express the painful fragility and vulnerability of the protagonist; however, a hint of “well, this is what happened, and I can’t do too much about it” flutters from her tormented heart.
Sincere, sentimental, reflective and honest, avOva sends shivers down your spine with their eclectic track ‘Indigo’.
In addition to the single, avOva released a lyric video for ‘Indigo’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
